CLEVELAND - Actor Rob Reiner reprised his "Meathead" role yesterday by failing to read the Al Gore campaign script, which has the veep playing the nice guy while his staff trashes George W. Bush. Reiner was the needler, just as he was with Archie Bunker on TV's "All in the Family," ining to get a reluctant Gore to dump on Bush and Texas at a children's health care forum here. The actor-director, who also bills himself as a social activist, twice interrupted Gore's pitch to expand the Child's Health Insurance Program in states that have failed to meet standards for federal matching funds. "Could one of those states be Texas?" Reiner asked. "If it is," Gore responded, "can I still not say?" When Reiner asked again a few minutes later, a frustrated Gore responded: "It's pretty obvious we didn't work this out. Can I still not say?" Gore tried to ignore Reiner's kibitzing by listening intently as families gathered at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital told of their difficulties in getting coverage for very sick children. While Gore doggedly stuck to the high road, his staff and other supporters were eager to bash Bush's politics for him. Gore spokesman Chris Lehane said Bush had ignored kids who could be helped by the CHIP program in favor of "big oil and the landed gentry." Dr. Irwin Redlener, chief pediatrician at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, said Texas has "stalled" with 30,000 to 40,000 children covered, compared with 500,000 who are eligible. He contrasted the Texas record with that of New York, where, he said, 20,000 kids per month were being enrolled. In Texas, Bush spokesman Dan Bartlett shot back that the Gore camp's attacks proved that he had "already abandoned his pledge to elevate the campaign." He denounced the "lengths he will go to in distorting Gov. Bush's record." For his part, Gore vowed to provide health insurance for all kids. "No fight is more important than the fight to make sure every child in America has the chance to grow up healthy and strong," he said. But Reiner got the last word. The Republican formula for diversity, he said, is to have "two guys heading the ticket from two different oil companies."

QI'm interested in finding software that can be used to design clothes. club158AThere is software that can be used to design or make patterns for clothes. Demo versions of at least three of them are available so you can test them before you buy them. An excellent starting point is Judy Heinem's "Needle Crafter's Computer Companion." This book has tons of information on using computers in needlecraft and sewing. It is also useful for anyone new to computers who would like to learn the basics of buying and setting up one for needlecraft. At the book's Web site you will find excerpts from the book, an introduction to the subject and links to other sites. The book costs $34.95 and is published by No Starch Press at (415) 284-9900; http://www.nostarch.com. Here is some software: Personal Patterns 3+ at (212) 929-6204; http://www.wfsinc.com; $169 (Also available: Programs for designer jackets and suits, $199; and children's clothes, $50.).DressShop 2.0; http://www.psl1.pslb.com/livingsoft/dresshop; $99.95 (An updated version, DressShop 2.5 is available for $149.). Fittingly Sew at (816) 461-1248; http://www.knitcraft.com Q: I just got on the Internet. QWhat is "push" on the Internet that we've been hearing about lately? Why are some people upset? A Every few months new buzz words take cyberspace by storm. Currently, it's push and pull technology. It stands for the way you get information off the Internet: It's pull when you type in a Web address or URL into your browser and call up a page or other information. It's push when the information is sent to you automatically. Essentially, the difference is between going to a newsstand to buy a magazine (pull) and having it delivered to your doorstep (push). An example of benign push technology is Pointcast. When you subscribe to it and install the software, it automatically selects news and stories you are interested in and streams them into your computer. My Yahoo! is another such program that helps you keep on top of the news by displaying it like a ticker on your screen. Both are good and useful servicesif you need the information. They are free, and you may want to check them out. One recent development has thrown a critical light on push technology. Netscape has announced that it will release a new version of its browser that includes Netcaster, a program that makes it easier to receive push transmission. Critics have raised the alarm that it could turn into a new form of online junk mail. You could be bombarded with computer junk you aren't interested in or don't want in such huge quantities. It could be a lot worse than the junk E-mail that floods your computer now. If you have a question about computers, E-mail it to: alouis You also can mail it to AnswerNet, Business Section, Daily News, 450 W. 33d St., New York, N.Y. 10001.

Two cops en route to help a woman and children held hostage by a Brooklyn gunman were injured yesterday when their truck collided with a car and flipped twice.Cops responded at 2 a.m. to a report of a domestic dispute at 327 Eastern Parkway. A woman answered the door and told police there was no disturbance, said police. But Wade Anthony Drummond, 36, was holding a cocked revolver to his wife's head, police said. "She told us nothing was wrong, but we didn't know her husband had a gun to her head," said police. For the next four hours, he held her hostage while their three crying children cowered in their bedroom, police said. At 6 a.m., the wife got free and ran to the Franklin Ave. subway station and screamed for help. Transit workers called cops, but by the time cops arrived, Drummond had fled, police said. Officers Madeline Lawrence and Dwayne Barnes, both assigned to Emergency Service Unit 8 in Queens, were racing down Penn St. at Marcy Ave. toward Eastern Parkway responding to the 6 a.m. call when they were broadsided by a car, officia ls said. Barnes suffered neck and back injuries; Lawrence has a broken leg and back injuries. The driver of the passenger car suffered minor injuries. All three were in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital. Drummond, arrested twice before for assaulting his wife, was violating an order of protection by being in the apartment, authorities said. While cops armed in riot gear and detectives from the 77th Precinct combed the neighborhood and searched the apartment for evidence, the husband called the cops inside the home from pay phones in the area. "He would call every few minutes and scream obscenities at us and order us to leave his apartment," said a police official who asked not to be identified. "He was saying some really vulgar and threatening things." But Drummond should have kept quiet. At 2:30 p.m. yesterday, he was nabbed at a pay phone near the home after Detective Brian Gundlach and Capt. Charles Wells tracked him down, police said. Drummond is charged with unlawful imprisonment, menacing and assault, as well as lesser charges.
