Modeling has two challenges: lenriang the tool/language, which as you suggest is comparable (even easier) than lenriang say Java or C++. The average time to proficiency reported in the survey (about two weeks) reflects this. The harder part is lenriang to model. One must understand the meaning of the model components (e.g. states, events ), and then assign aspects of the SUT to these elements. The ability to abstract , i.e. to know what can be ignored without degrading the model is critical. Also critical is having a sense for organization how to create a hierarchy or to encapsulate something. The simple act of choosing names is crucial and can be surprisingly hard. This is where the real difficulty occurs. It is like the difference between playing an instrument and playing music.
