Our Identity: mistaken or absolute?
So what is "identity" anyway? Identity is simply a state or fact of remaining the same under different circumstances; being oneself and not another. We are identified by our character. Mathematically speaking, identity is an equation which is valid for all values of its variables. This means that true identity cannot be duplicated, and if attempted, leaves only a mistaken resemblance of the fact. What does this mean and how does our identity define who we are as created beings? It is in our character makeup. Our character consists of varying circumstances and how we deal with those varying circumstances determine our character. So character is developed over time. Holy Scripture states that we are to "work out our salvation in fear and trembling". Scripture also states that "faith without works is dead", and that "suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us". So if we are "identified" by our character, then it is accurate that relationships (companionship with one another) can serve as a mirror into our own lives to help shape us into who we are. What does this say about God's companionship with man? If we are truly made in the image and likeness of God, then our identity is the same forever and always, and therefore cannot be altered. It is in our very DNA, which is our own chemical defined quality which cannot be duplicated. This is why there can only be a case of "mistaken identity", and not stolen identity. Your identity is your own and no one else's; to each their own.
